Favorite place in Iceland?

I would say Hornstrandir in the Westfjords. It’s one of the most remote parts of Iceland. It’s a fantastic destination for hiking, with challenging terrain and excellent opportunities for spotting Arctic foxes, seals, whales and teeming bird life.

One must thing to do in Iceland?

To soak in a hot spring in the middle of the nature (preferably naked, if you want to do it the Icelandic style)

One place you recommend everyone to see on their trip in Iceland?

Jökulsárlón, the glacier lagoon. Some might think that it’s touristy, but don’t make that stop you. Here you can enjoy the wondrous ice sculptures and if you are lucky you might see some seals. In the same area you’ll find the diamond beach, a black volcanic beach filled with small ice bergs. It’s an incredible place, where at sunrise and sunset the ice will look like shining diamonds with the sun rays reflecting through them.

One thing that you must pack for your trip to Iceland?

Wool layer and wool socks to keep next to your body. Forget about cotton when you are travelling Iceland.

Do you like Iceland better in the winter or in the summertime?

I actually like Iceland better during winter. There is just something so charming about the stormy weather. I also love the landscape when it’s covered in snow.

Steinar Thor

Instagram: @steinarthor.is

Steinar Thors is a true local with beautiful aerial shots of the charming city of Reykjavik and all over Iceland. On his Instagram you can find everything from the beautiful old houses in Reykjavik to landscape photographs to fireworks over the New Years Eve in Iceland.

Favorite place in Iceland?

I have a hot tub in my garden overlooking Reykjanes peninsula where I can see Mt. Keilir amongst other mountains in the distance. Probably my favorite place of all. Otherwise I really enjoy being around the ocean. Water is such a big part of who we are as Icelanders, through waterfalls and geysers to glaciers and super clean drinkable water all on this island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s hard not to be fascinated by it.

One must thing to do in Iceland?

The holy-triple: Relax in the hot tub at a local swimming pool until your fingers look like raisins followed by a hot dog and ice-cream. Doesn’t matter the weather, doesn’t matter the time of day or year, this is the consecration to become Icelandic. I would do the swimming at Sundlaug Kópavogs followed by ice-cream and hot dog at “sjoppan” (kiosk) Álfurinn across the street. That’s how you experience the city as a true local.

One place you recommend everyone to see on their trip in Iceland?

I think it’s only a matter of time before Sólheimar eco-village becomes a mainstream stop in the Golden Circle area. I would visit it now before it gets crowded with tourists. Organic greenhouse, art venues and workshops besides the local residents are great hosts.

Do you like Iceland better in the winter or in the summertime?

Almost 24 hours of sunlight during summer creates so many opportunities to seize the day. I remember for an example a Saturday night after a long day of activities with our foreign friends visiting Iceland the idea came up to go to Reykjadalur geothermal river.
We headed towards Hveragerði around 10 pm and walked up to the river arriving around 1 am. Still bright outside. By the time we walked back the sun was starting to rise on the horizon offering a new day for new opportunities. I mean can you top this? I don’t think so!

Favorite place in Iceland?

It used to be Jökulsárlón for a very long time but now its a hidden river canyon close to Reykjavík, where I often go swimming in the summer. Its my favorite because I get to be all alone and enjoy the beautiful surroundings with my own thoughts.

One must thing to do in Iceland?

Well there are a lot of things that are important to experience. It all depends how lucky you are… For example, I would say that spending a full day exploring epic locations and then relaxing in a hot spring with friends while enjoying the northern lights is something everybody should experience. But for all that to work out, you need luck… and good weather.

One place you recommend everyone to see on their trip in Iceland ?

There are so many, so I cant choose one. But what I would recommend doing… is renting a car and see as many spots as you can with the time you have. It’s also a must to say Hi! to our Icelandic Horses on the way!

One thing that you must pack for your trip to Iceland?

For me its a Camera… You don’t need anything else, maybe a warm jacket but camera first! Also the people your travel with make your trip, so bring some good company !

Favorite place in Iceland?

If I would have to pick one place I think I would say Ásbyrgi. It is a truly magical, peaceful and beautiful place up North. According to Norse mythology Sleipnir, the 8-legged horse of the god Óðinn, is said to have put one of its hoofs down, creating the canyon Ásbyrgi.

One must do thing in Iceland?

Hire a car and drive down the south coast to see all the waterfalls and Mars-like black beaches

One must see place in Iceland?

I don´t think that I can pick just one place; Highlands, Jökulsárlón, Goðafoss, Þórsmörk, the black beaches….

One thing that you should pack for your trip to Iceland?

A camera and wear good shoes and warm clothes as the weather is very unpredictable in Iceland.

Do you like Iceland better in the winter or summer?

I really love summer. The days are so long, your energy is endless and the whole country comes to live. The summer colors are like nothing I’ve seen anywhere else. Winter has its charm as well but spectacular places like the highlands are difficult to get to during that time of the year
