Fantastical Tour to Sigöldugljúfur

Sigöldugljúfur, valley of tears, has many waterfalls in its lap. Since it’s remote location, not that many people have visited this extraordinary place. It is located in the highlands of Iceland and you will need a 4wd car to get there. The fact that it can be hard to reach Sigöldugljúfur only makes it more special since the crowds are usually not here. Pictures of this beautiful canyon have gone viral on the internet, but since no guided tours take you here (only the private tours), not many people have the ability to visit this place. This fantastical canyon is pure joy when you view it because of the multiple colors that surround it. Aqua blue water of Tungnaá River and abundant vegetation contribute to the brightness of Sigöldugljúfur. Sigöldugljúfur looks amazing amidst the black sand of incredible lava landscapes. Despite being a small canyon, it has enjoyed enough attention from the explorers. You can hike to the top of the canyon without much difficulty. Sigöldugljúfur is an artistic escape for photographers. A camera must always be carried along when you visit here. Amazing views of flora and fauna, enriched by the vast boundary of the mountains can be a perfect backdrop for clicking pictures.

Preparing for Sigöldugljúfur

Situated in the Highlands of Iceland, Sigöldugljúfur is a bit challenging to reach through the rough mountain roads. After crossing the bumpy roads to Sigöldugljúfur, tourists will be rewarded with mesmerizing and unspoiled views as if they are transported to ancient Greek artworks. Considering its central location in the highlands, you can reach the canyon from multiple routes. It is located at a distance of 172 kilometers from Reykjavik city, while the distance from Vik is 189 kilometers which is the southernmost village in Iceland. If you are coming from Akureyri or the Capital of the North, you will have to drive about 239 kilometers to reach Sigöldugljúfur. You can drive towards east following ring road 1 from Reykjavik to visit Sigoldugljufur. When driving from Reykjavik, you can make a quick stop at the town of Selfoss, passing which you will have to follow road 30. Then take a right turn onto road 32 and drive North until you reach the F26 highland road. Drive south from the F26 onto mountain road F208, which is a 4 wheel drive road that climbs up the hill. When you reach Sigalda Power Plant and notice a small hill shortly, a dirt road to the left will be visible. A parking lot is constructed near the road and from there the canyon is easily accessible on foot.

When you have reached Sigöldugljúfur, we recommend that you keep on going to Landmannalaugar Nature Reserve. It is only a 43 minutes drive (23 kilometers) on F208 until you arrive in one of the most beautiful locations in Iceland. We recommend that you take at least 2 days for this trip since there will be so much to explore.

Tips for Driving

Ensure that you rent a vehicle that fits your luggage and can cover the gravel roads. Hiring a professional for driving is recommended if you do not feel comfortable driving on gravel roads in the highlands. Only F-roads lead to Sigöldugljúfur canyon which signifies that a 4×4 vehicle is mandatory if you are driving towards the canyon. They are best suited for tough mountain roads. The site currently lacks basic amenities. So water and food supplies must be carried by the tourists. There are also no gas stations nearby the canyon. Selfoss is a good stop if you want to buy any supplies such as gas and basic medicines. A short hike is required before you reach the canyon. Hence shoes with excellent grip are recommended. Weather can be quite tricky and harsh in the highlands of Iceland, even in summers. Pack something waterproof and warm, in case there is light drizzling or a downpour.

Exploring around Sigöldugljúfur

The breathtaking canyon is on route to Iceland’s popular geological wonder, Landmannalaugar. It is also called the ‘People’s Pools’ as it is one of the most famous places for hiking. Locals and explorers have made it a quick spot for natural hot spring bathing as well. Situated at the core of Iceland’s southern Highlands, Landmannalaugar is an exciting place that must not be missed. The reserve is bliss for flora and fauna lovers.
