Iceland is all about rare and picturesque sites that are sure to leave you in awe. One such tour to provide you with the beauty of Iceland is the Golden Circle. The route primarily consists of Thingvellir National Park, Geysir Geothermal Area, and Gullfoss waterfall. This is the famous tour and also has a minibus stop at a traditional Icelandic farm to see some herds and get some free ICE-CREAM (the little treat you deserve). This adventure begins when the experienced guide picks you up in a minibus in the morning for the tour of Golden Circle.
The Three Stop Tour
The sites in the circuit are renowned across the world and are spectacular and unique. It usually takes a two-hour drive from the capital city of Reykjavik, so you can visit all the three sites in a day.
Thingvellir National Park
The national park is an amazing site that is steeped in history and folklore and is surrounded by majestic geology. It is the only site in the country that is recognized as “UNESCO World Heritage Site”. It is the first stop on the Golden Circle, the park is located about 45-minute away from Reykjavik. The place is where the tectonic plates, the North American and the Eurasian plate move away from each other.
The biggest natural lake in Iceland is also located in Thingvellir National Park and is home to several species of fish and birds. The place also holds historical importance. At this place, Icelanders founded their parliament in 930 A.D. where the chieftains held annual summer meetings. The name “Thingvellir” translates to “Parliament Plains”.
Geysir geothermal area
The second stop on the Golden Circle route is the Geysir Geothermal Area that is located within the Haukadalur Valley. This is a 50-minute drive from the national park. Enroute, you can get to see the volcanic activity of the Earth as it grows intense. Geysir Geothermal Area hosts hundreds of colorful hot springs and two geysers erupting hot springs. One is called “Geysir” after which all the geysers in the world are named. This hot spring erupts seldom. The other geyser in the region is called “Strokkur” and erupts every 5 minutes up to 40 meters.
This is the third stop on the Golden Circle route and is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland – Gullfoss. It is 10 minutes down the road from Geysir. This waterfall is located in a plunging, ancient valley and tumbles down from the height of 32 meters. It experiences the heaviest flow during summer. The melting water comes from Iceland’s second biggest glacier Langjokull in the distance. Get an opportunity to watch the majestic waterfall, definitely a picturesque moment. Summer is indeed the best time to visit the waterfall.
A Bonus Destination
You get an opportunity to visit the Efstidalur farm that is owned by the family by the same name since 1850. The Icelandic family-run business is all about the traditional Icelandic farming culture and focuses on cows and cattle breeding. You get to enjoy some tasty farm-to-table dairy products while overlooking the stunning mountains and friendly animals. The expedition also invites you to taste the ice cream while watching the animals in the stable.
Touring the Golden Circle in a minibus makes it much better as it makes it easy to stay engaged with the information provided and avoid unnecessary crowds. The guide pays undivided attention to all your queries and helps you explore the area in a true Icelandic way.
