About Tour

Join us on this marvelous snowmobiling tour on one of the gems in the South, the Eyjafjallajokull, and experience it in nothing less than a spectacular way. An extraordinary experience, this tour is the perfect opportunity for the thrill-seekers to have a good dose of adventure. Safe enough for the beginners and adventurous enough for the experienced drivers, this snowmobiling tour atop the Eyjafjallajokull Glacier awaits your arrival with bounds of new experiences and gorgeous landscapes to make your tour as perfect as anything can be.

Eyjafjallajokull Glacier - About the Location

Your snowmobiling tour will take place on one of the small-sized glacier-cum-volcanoes in the country. What makes Eyjafjallajokull Glacier special is its notorious nature. Eyjafjallajokull Glacier is a stratovolcano, a term used to describe the tall and conical shape of a volcano. Eyjafjallajokull Glacier is known in the whole country for its extremely active self in the year 2010. The activity in this volcano was so high that scientists got worried about an upcoming eruption. The eruptions of the Eyjafjallajokull Glacier started on March 20th in the year 2010 and lasted till August. The initial eruptions were on the lower scale of destructive but they picked the tempo in April which finally required the evacuation of the people living nearby. The eruption released a lot of volcano ash in the atmosphere which took several years to clear up. A sudden appearance was made by a lightning bolt in between the eruption amid the cloud of volcanic ash which earned the whole phenomenon the nickname, “dirty thunderstorm”.

A place which reeks of disruptive, dramatic, and truly terrific beauty, Eyjafjallajokull Glacier is perfect to take on any activity whatsoever if you are someone who would love to experience what is like to stand on a thick sheet of ice that houses a now-dormant but a volcano which has been active enough to take the volcano Katla head-on. Not to mention Eyjafjallajokull glacier also powers up many prominent waterfalls of the south including Seljalandsfoss waterfall, Skogafoss waterfall, and Kvernufoss waterfall. Needless to say, the views you will see when atop the glacier are unmatched in beauty.

Proceedings of the Tour

Your journey will start at the base which is located near Gljúfrabúi by Road 249. You can also choose to opt for the custom pickup and drop at your desired location if you like. You will meet your tour guide at the base who will then explain the whole process to you along with the safety procedure of the tour. After the introduction and induction, your guide will help you put on the snowsuit along with other protective equipment like helmet and gloves. Next comes hopping on a super jeep and head on to the slopes and then up to the place where snowmobiles are stacked.

The tour may last anywhere between 2 to 4 hours. The snow is quite thick and easy to access in winters so the lessened driving shortens the overall duration of the tour to 2 hours. But summer season brings in the need to drive higher up the glacier to reach the snow which makes the whole tour duration somewhere around 4 hours. Either way, you will get a full 1 hour to enjoy snowmobiling no matter the season or the driving time so that you have plenty of time to get a nice enough dose of thrill and adventure.
