    Fossálar Waterfalls in South-Iceland

Fossálar river and waterfall are located in South-Iceland. It is one of the lesser-known waterfalls in Iceland or rather a hidden gem that has not been discovered or grabbed a position in the travel itinerary. But despite this reason, Fossálar Waterfall has managed to be a perfect stop to capture the authentic Icelandic beauty. The dramatic but enormously graceful cascade with spectacular geological formations adds greatly to the surrounding area, which makes it a perfect place to relax and rejuvenate in the lap of nature. Though it is a small waterfall, the vicinity and photogenic exposure make it a popular spot for photographers. You will surely be mesmerized by the cacophony of cascades; some gently falls while others tumble and babbles actively down from the massive cliffs. It seems like a landscape painting and captivates the onlookers. This river is located amidst the lava field and falls in many smaller waterfalls. During the super-eruption of Laki in 1783, this lava field was created. It was considered one of the deadliest eruptions in history.

When you reach Fossálar Waterfall, you will find a small parking space, towards the south of the road. Park your vehicle there, but ensure that it could be extremely dangerous to stop anywhere in between or on the shoulder of the road. So, don’t be in a rush, park your vehicle in the available small parking space, get down, and be extremely cautious when heading towards the river. Don’t try to be close to the riverbank, rather enjoy from a distance. Make sure you carry all your travel and hiking gear. Don’t forget to carry warm clothes as the weather could be brutally cold.

    How to find Fossálar?

It could not be easier to find Fossálar waterfalls. Most people just stumble upon them while driving along the south coast, but can not find much information about the waterfalls since they are not listed on Google Maps or similar services. When you are driving the south coast in the eastern direction, you will find Fossálar waterfalls just 16 kilometers (10 miles) northeast from Kirkjubæjarklaustur. There is a small parking lot next to the waterfalls that can fit a few cars. Remember that it is not allowed to park your car on the side of the road.
