Kleifar Campsite – Kirkjubæjarklaustur

Add to Bucket List

Kleifar campsite is one of my favorite campsites in Iceland. Kleifar is located in the beautiful centrally located village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur in south Iceland. The weather in Kirkjubæjarklaustur is often very good, the summers are warm and sunny and the winters are usually mild. One of the main reasons I tend to go there often is because it’s centrally located on the south coast and close to both Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon and Skaftafell National Park but also not too far from Vík.
Kleifar campsite is not a large campsite but I think it’s very cozy and great for families.

Stjornarfoss waterfall

Stjornarfoss waterfall is located in Kleifar campsite. The waterfall is not so well known but that makes it even more special. This secret waterfall is very beautiful and will give you an unique photo opportunity. You will hear the sound of Stjornarfoss waterfall as you fall asleep and I think it’s absolutely wonderful to hear the sound of nature as you cuddle up in your tent.
On a good summer day when the weather is good enough, the water from the waterfall gets so warm that you might even go for a swim in the waterfall. That’s definitely something you will remember and it will give you an amazing photo opportunity.

Systrafoss waterfall

As you are staying in Kleifar campsite you might want to explore Kirkjubæjarklaustur village. Systrafoss is the name of the waterfall in the middle of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. You will definitely notice this waterfall as you drive or walk thorugh the village. The river falls from the lake Systravatn, which is located at the top of the mountain, over the mountain edge above Kirkjubæjarklaustur and into the gorge Fossárgil.

Hiking Paths

You can find a lot of great hiking paths close to the campsite. One of my favorite hike around the campsite is to take a walk up to the hills where Stjóranrfoss waterfall comes from. You will feel like you are the only human being in the world as you will probably only see some sheeps up there. You will also get some amazing views over the canyon, like the one of the photo above.

Another great day activity is to hike up to Systravatn lake and to Systrafoss waterfall. You can find beautiful hiking trails around the waterfall. A hiking trail will lead you from Kirkjubæjarklaustur to the top of the mountain and to Systravatn lake. From there the view is breath taking and the hike will absolutely be worth it.

When you have made your turn to Geirland you will have to drive around 1,1 km to reach Kleifar campsite. Once you are at the campsite you can park your car and set up your tent. The campsite has good facilities due to its size. You can find two toilets, running water, benches and tables. Directly against the campsite is a football field and it’s a short way to Kirkjubæjarklaustur where you can find a swimming pool, good restaurant, a supermarket and the ÁTVR alcohol shop.
The campsite is open from June 1st to August 31st.
