Hörgshlíðarlaug hot spring is located in the lap of the beautiful Mjóifjörður fjords in the Westfjords of Iceland. Part of private property, Hörgshlíðarlaug hot spring offers an exquisite view over the fjord. Those who feel tired from all the roaming around across the vicinity can stop for a casual dip in this hot spring. Sitting at the boundary of the sea, Hörgshlíðarlaug is located with high and strong mountains watching over it. Usually, you can notice how many other hidden hot springs in Iceland are left to their fate. This hot water pool is different as it has not been left abandoned to its natural state. Here you can find a well- built concrete pool for visitors to relax in.

Even if you do not want to go inside the hot spring, you can cherish the marvelous views from afar. A visit here on a clear and bright sunny day is highly recommended. You can soak in all the goodness of nature beneath the sun in the pool. Many people like to take a dip into the cold sea between relaxing in the warm hot spring.

Taking a Dip in the Hot Spring

Hörgshlíðarlaug is a serene location that will rejuvenate you. Along with stunning natural scenes, it also offers basic amenities for visitors. There is a shed-like room built on the side used as a changing room. Although, it is quite basic since the place never gets excessively crowded, so you can easily use this small changing room. The hot spring always stays around 40 degrees, perfectly suited for bathing. Hörgshlíðarlaug is six meters in length, while the width is two meters. You can comfortably stand inside the pool as it is just 80 centimeters deep. There are three sources that feed the hot spring. Two sources are for hot water, and one is for cold.

Hörgshlíðarlaug pool is free of charge. Though, you have to take permission from the owner of the pool. Some visitors get shy asking for a bath thinking that they will be denied. On the contrary, Icelanders are soft-spoken and like it very much when someone visits them. Please refrain yourself from creating any mess. Visitors are expected to leave the pool neat and clean.

Make sure that you carry a swimsuit and a towel as there is no facility to rent any of those at Hörgshlíðarlaug hot spring.

How to get to the pool

The pool has easy access from Mjóifjörður fjords. If you are traveling from the west, you have to take route number 663 to exit out of Ísafjörður, eastwards. It is a route with many twists and turns & takes you through several fjords. Once you make your way to Mjóifjörður fjords, there are signboards to guide you towards Hörgshlíðarlaug. After driving for about two kilometers from there, you will reach the hot spring which is situated by the sea. You must stop here if you are driving through the Westfjords.

Mjóifjörður fjord is a great option to explore around Hörgshlíðarlaug pool. There are various amazing things to experience in the vicinity. Mjóifjörður means ‘Narrow Fjord’ in English. The 18 kilometer stretch of the Fjord boasts of many out-of-the-way and hidden places. Heydalur farm is one of the most popular spots. You can also find three hot springs in Heydalur, one indoor and two outdoor hot springs. In Heydalur you can also find a campsite and a small guesthouse with a restaurant.
