About Tour

Looking to add a tad bit more to the adventurous spirit of exploring the unexplored? Add an ATV ride to it and make an entry in style. Join this enthralling tour which take you to two of the most popular attractions of the south coast. Filled with adrenaline rushes, chills, and goosebumps, this ride will end with a kayak tour of the Sólheimajökull glacier where you will get to operate a kayak and float amongst the calming beauty of the surrounding placid waters and the grandeur of the majestic glacier in front of you. Interested yet? Let’s explore what the tour has in store for you.

Get Face to Face with Fun and Thrill

The tour will start with an ATV ride on the black sand beach in the area. This is a meet-on-location tour so you will find your guide at Mýrdalsjökull Base. As soon you reach the location and are ready to hit the road (in this case, the black sand beach), the guide will explain the safety measures that you need to take when riding the ATV’s and provide you with the necessary gear that you will need on the ride. After all the formalities, you head towards your vehicles and ride off on the beach. You will cover a great area of the black sand beach on the south coast and witness some beautiful scenery of the glacier. The final stop of your ride will be the Sólheimasandur DC3 plane wreck site.

Note that a valid driver’s license is required to drive the ATV and the drivers should be 17 years of age or older to be eligible. The license should be in English. If it is in any other language, please make sure that you carry a valid English translation of it. A motorbike license and a learner’s permit are not valid for driving in Iceland.

Paddle Towards Tranquility

When the ATV ride ends, you will have to travel to the next meeting point, Sólheimajökull Base – where your kayak tour will start. The driving instruction to the meet-up point will be on the voucher that you will receive on booking the tour. Once you are there, the same procedure of your guide explaining the operating instructions and providing the kayaking equipment and protection gear, like dry suit, will follow. You will receive some hands-on tips about paddling.

Now, when everyone is set with equipment, gear, and techniques, you will board your beginner-friendly kayak and set out in small groups of 7 or 8 people. This paddling trip last for about 90 minutes. You will experience the glacier in a way a walking tour will never be able to offer. You will see the high cliffs, icebergs breaking away from the glacier and the beautiful electric ice contrasting with the colors of the surroundings.

The tour including the ATV ride and kayaking in the glacier lagoon will last about 5.5 hours. You will get enough time to click pictures for your Instagram and Snapchat handles at all the sites. Leave no leaves unturned in search of ‘the thrill’ with this glorious tour of the south coast attraction and add another page to your travel itinerary.

Most frequent questions and answers

The meeting point for this tour is at Mýrdalsjökull Base.

We kindly ask you to be at the meeting point on time.  We recommend arriving at least 20 min before the scheduled departure time. Late arrivals unfortunately will miss out on their reservation and it will result in the cancellation of your booking and a full forfeiture of your booking fee.

Driving time to Mýrdalsjökull Base Cam from Reykjavík is around 2 hours and 12 minutes in good road conditions.

Before we head on the tour we need to get everyone fitted with the equipment, crampons and harnesses. It is important that people arrive 20 minutes before so everyone is ready at the departure time.

We always recommend to book as soon as you are ready especially if you have a strict travel schedule or a large group. This is a small group tour so it gets fully booked pretty quickly. It is easy to change or cancel 24 hours before departure by emailing us. Tours can also be purchased the day of as long as there are spaces available.

This tour is operated in small groups of 2-8 people. If you are traveling with a larger group, you can send us an email and we will see what we can do so that you can all travel together.

We encourage bringing hiking boots for glacier tours. They have to be hard on the sole and tight around the ankle. It is also possible to rent hiking boots when booking the tour.

Wear warm clothes. Pick clothing according to weather that day. We advise that you dress in layers. We will provide you with a drysuit for the kayaking tour.

Check out our Summer Packing List for more details.

We recommend a long sleeve clothing in order to separate your skin from the dry suit. Avoid bulky clothing they might restrain your ability to put on the dry suit. Usually worrying about temperature is unnecessary since this is a summer tour and also guests need to walk to the lagoon and paddle during the tour. Extra socks might come in handy if your feet get wet.

Check out our Summer Packing List for more details.

Unfortunately it is not possible to go on a glacier lagoon kayaking tour during the winter time, this tour is only operated from May – September. It is however possible to go on a glacier hike on Sólheimajökull all year.

If the tour gets cancelled, for example due to weather, we will let you know as soon as possible and you can choose between rescheduling the tour or receiving a full refund.

There is a maximum to how many kayaks can be on each tour per guide. The guide will for each tour find out the best solution according to the ability and interest of the group.
