Itinerary

Super Jeep Tour to the Blue Ice Cave in Iceland

Your trip will start at the parking lot of Jökulsárlón where you will meet your tour guide. The guide will explain the journey ahead briefly and give you an introduction to the equipment you will be using on the tour. After that, you will head to a super jeep parked in the lot and take an adventurous ride on Vatnajökull glacier with your hiking trope. The Super Jeep ride is an experience on its own. Make sure that you are wearing something comfortable and well insulated so that the glacial cold doesn’t get to you. Putting on a waterproof shell layer will also prove handy.

Vatnajokull Glacier

Once you have traveled the bumpy landscape and reached the foot of the glacier, you will take a short walk on Vatnajökull glacier and learn about various geographical, historical, and other-worldly facts about the place. Vatnajökull glacier is one of the best known glaciers in  the world and has been the site for several episodes of the popular HBO tv series – Game of Thrones. Your guide will show and explain the details of every interesting fact about the glacier and the ice cave.

The Crystal Ice Cave

Once you reach the glacier, your guide will show you how to put on your crampons or ice cleats and other safety equipment. Not long after that you will reach the ice cave and start the exploration. Since the structure and location of the cave change every year, our guides visit the caves before the touring season starts to get a fair idea of the condition of the caves.

Not only will you have enough time to admire the gorgeous crystal blue ice sculptures in the cave but you can also stop at places as much as you like to take pictures and make Instagram stories to commemorate this visit. If you are lucky and there are some other ice cave formations nearby then you will even get to visit them. Your tour guide will make sure that you will have the time of your life here.

FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers

The meeting point for the Crystal Blue Ice Cave tour is at the parking lot of Jökulsárlón, the glacier lagoon. Our guides will be by Super Jeep south to the Jökulsárlón Cafeteria.

We will see you at our meeting point 20 minutes before the departure time stated on your ticket. Please note that if you arrive after departure time, your place on the tour can’t be guaranteed or refunded.

The Driving time to Jökulsárlón from Reykjavík is around 5 hours in good road conditions. Find a map with directions below.

We encourage bringing hiking boots for glacier tours. They have to hard on the sole and tight around the ankle. Unfortunately, don’t have the option to rent hiking boots for our Crystal Ice Cave Tour from Jökulsárlón for the moment.

Weather in Iceland is very unpredictable. For tours during winter: warm clothing as first layer, waterproof jacket with a hoodie, hiking boots with ankle protection and hard sole, a hat and gloves are ideal. For tours during summer, bringing a light rain jacket or a soft shell with a hoodie is in most cases enough protection. Icelanders often say, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes”. Jeans are not recommended for the tour as they become very heavy, cold and uncomfortable to wear when they get wet.

It rains a lot in Iceland, but we do not let rain stop us from going out and enjoy nature. All we need to do is choose our clothing wisely, which is why we recommend wearing waterproof clothing as the second layer. Of course, safety is our #1 priority. In case of extreme weather conditions, we will cancel our tours and do our best to reschedule. In these cases, you’ll receive a full refund.

This is a personal choice. We have had pregnant women on our glacier hikes and we always recommend you read the description of the activity to get a better idea. In any case, feel free to contact our Service Team for further questions and concerns.
