All these sites hold a special significance in the western part of the country and visiting them should be a must for every tourist that comes to the country. You will be witnessing beautiful sites of UNESCO world heritage sites, golden waterfalls, greenhouses, stables, and geothermal areas. So, pack the day pack, board your ride, and get on with one of the most incredible routes of the country.
About the Tour
You will board your minibus from your choice of pick-up location. There are a few stops available all across the capital city so you can choose any according to your convenience. The minibus can occupy about 18 people at once. This tour will move backward to avoid crowds and start at Kerið Crater. This beautiful place is a perfect oval crater which now stands at the place where once there was a blazing volcano. The magma in the volcano dried out and the cone collapsed where it was standing. This is when the crater was formed. It is now filled with azure and green water. Beautiful multi-colored lava rocks encircle the crater and create a beautiful landscape.
Your next stop will be Friðheimar Farm which is known for its incredible greenhouses and pure breed Icelandic horses. It is located very close to the town of Flúðir where the Secret Lagoon is located. You will be visiting the stables and meet with the horse. You will have a tea/coffee break here and spend some quality time learning about the horses and their special gait – Tolt along with tasting some lush tomatoes at the greenhouse. There will be a presentation about the horses in the stable and a show that will showcase the different gaits of the horses.
Gullfoss Waterfall or the Golden Waterfall will be your next stop. It gets fed by the river Hvítá which is a glacial river of Langjökull glacier. The waterfall is 32 meters high, falling into two steps into a 70-meter-deep gorge. The view is simply exquisite form the top with Langjökull glacier in the distance.
Geysir Geothermal Area
Your minibus will stop at Geysir Geothermal Area the next. There are about a hundred little geothermal spots but the area is known for Geysir and Strokkur, the two main geysers in the area. Geysir is dormant now so you won’t be able to get a show from it but Strokkur erupts every 5-10 minutes and shoots up water 20 meters high in the sky. There are thin paths designed amidst the geothermal areas so that you can walk safely.
Þingvellir National Park
Your last stop will be Þingvellir National Park, the only UNESCO world heritage site in the country which contains the very first parliament building of the country. Meeting were held in there from 930 to 1798. The operations have been shifted to the one in the capital now but the old site remains open for visitors. There are many different sights to lay your eye upon in the park including the ridge created by shifting of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.
The tour will last about 8 hours and you will be accompanied by a guide at all times. The tour will also have a table reserved at the Friðheimar Farm which is famous for its incredibly delicious dishes made with homegrown tomatoes and other herbs. So, prepare yourself for one of the most wholesome tours around the country and get ready to update your itinerary.
