About the Icelandic Horse
While the normal steed is a glorious enough creature itself, Icelandic horses take this beauty, charm, elegance, and power that is associated with horses to a whole other level. Slightly shorter than the average horse, the Icelandic horse is famous for its beautiful fur coat that grows in winters along with its special 5 gaits. While the normal horse can only do a maximum of 4 kinds of gaits or walks, the Icelandic horse can do 5 different kinds of gaits which include the common 4 and one special gait – Tolt. Many people especially go for horse riding just to experience this unique gait of the horses.
Tolt is an extremely smooth gait. The slight bumps that you feel when riding a horse are like an alien concept when it comes to tolt. There are several horse shows where the riders and owner show off this special gait by riding with a glass filled with water in hand without spilling even a drop. Not experiencing this special gait and not making friends with the intelligent and warm Icelandic horses would render your trip incomplete. And if you are lucky, you may even get to say hello to one of the special Icelandic horses with blue eyes and multi-colored fur.
The Red Hills - Rauðhólar
This tour will take place in the Red Hills near the capital city. Also known as Rauðhólar, Red hills is a group of pseudocraters located on the southeastern edge of the city of Reykjavík. Pseudocraters are formed when molten lava at a temperature of 1100°C freezes over a pond, swamps, or any water body with stagnant water. The lava makes heavy steam which in turn causes an explosion hence creating a pseudocrater with an explosion instead of a real volcanic explosion. The lava fields in which these hills are located are known as Elliðaárhraun. These craters are about 5200 years old and get their name from the dark red colored soil.
