Vestrahorn – The Mountain of the West
Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Djúpivogur to Vestrahorn, one of Iceland’s most dramatic mountains. Rising nearly 500 meters from the flat, black sands of the Stokksnes peninsula, Vestrahorn offers a hauntingly beautiful landscape of jagged peaks, shifting sand dunes, and shallow tidal pools that often reflect the mountain like a mirror. You’ll have time here to stretch your legs, walk along the shoreline, and take stunning photographs of this cinematic setting—often called “Batman Mountain” due to its iconic silhouette.
Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
Next, you’ll arrive at one of Iceland’s crown jewels: Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. This breathtaking lagoon is filled with giant icebergs that have broken off from Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet of Vatnajökull Glacier, the largest glacier in Europe. These luminous blue and white icebergs float quietly across the icy water on their way to the sea. You’ll have plenty of time here to walk along the lagoon, enjoy the serenity of the surroundings, and take memorable photos. You may even spot seals swimming among the icebergs!
Diamond Beach
Just a short walk across the road from the lagoon lies Diamond Beach, where icebergs from Jökulsárlón wash up on the shore. The contrast between the glistening, transparent ice chunks and the black volcanic sand makes this one of the most visually striking places in Iceland. It’s a photographer’s dream and a surreal experience for every traveler. Here, you’ll have the chance to stroll along the beach and witness the magical interaction of light, ice, and ocean.
Eystrahorn
On your return journey, you’ll stop at Eystrahorn, another stunning mountain known for its jagged ridges and wild coastal views. Less visited than Vestrahorn, Eystrahorn offers a quieter but equally spectacular stop. The mountain rises steeply from the ocean and provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, from sharp sea cliffs to moss-covered lava fields. It’s a great opportunity to reflect on your day, snap a few final photos, and appreciate the untouched beauty of East Iceland.
