itinerary
We’ll start our adventure by meeting you at your chosen hotel or bus stop in Reykjavik around 9 am.
As we make our way to Litli-Hrútur, we’ll pass through a highly volcanic area, where thousand-year-old lava fields dominate the entire Reykjanes peninsula.
Upon reaching the parking lot, we’ll commence our hike towards the volcano, where you’ll witness the captivating sight of an erupting volcano up close!
Hiking to Litli Hrutur Active Volcano
Guided by experienced experts, we’ll cover a total distance of nearly 20 km, navigating through rugged terrain and captivating black volcanic landscapes. As we approach the erupting volcano, feel the ground tremble beneath your feet and marvel at the mesmerizing display of molten lava shooting into the sky. Capture this awe-inspiring sight with your camera or simply immerse yourself in the raw power of nature’s fury.
Amidst the breathtaking views, we’ll take a delightful chocolate break, savoring HRAUN Chocolate, which aptly means LAVA in Icelandic.
Continuing our journey, we’ll reach the mountain’s summit, granting us an exceptional view of the volcano and its magnificent lava fields from above.
Important information about the volcano hike
- The tour duration is approximately 10-12 hours.
- This is a “medium” difficulty tour, so be prepared for some challenges.
- The hike is lengthy, approximately 9 km each way, requiring 2-3 hours of walking on a gravel path.
- Please heed your guide’s safety recommendations to avoid exposure to volcanic air pollution near the lower part of the active volcano site.
- Hiking boots are mandatory, and we offer them for rent if needed.
- Be sure to bring sufficient snacks and water for the journey.
- The age limit for this tour is 12-70 years old. Exceptions may be made for expert hikers who are confident they can keep up with the group’s pace and handle the duration and distance without any issues.

- We will charge a cancellation fee of 100% if booking is cancelled 1 day or less before event
- We will charge a cancellation fee of 3% if booking is cancelled 999 days or less before event

Pick up
- Pick ups are in downtown Reykjavik from 9am – 9.30am / 7pm-7.30pm, depending on where you are staying.
- We also offer Pick Up from the Meeting Point in Grindavik. Please specify this within your checkout.
- Pick up is not available from Keflavik airport or outside of the greater capital area.
- Please note that we provide pick-up services exclusively from designated locations within the Reykjavik city greater area. During the booking process, you’ll find a drop-down menu with these locations for your convenience.
- To ensure a smooth experience, we kindly request all our customers to share their pick-up location at least 24 hours before their tour departure. Unfortunately, we cannot be held responsible if you fail to provide your pick-up location or miss the tour departure.
- Pick-up operations will commence at the scheduled departure time indicated on your voucher and may take up to 30 minutes. We kindly ask our passengers to be prepared and present at their specified location, making it easier for our team to locate them swiftly.

- This tour can be cancelled up to 24 hours from the departure time with the full price refunded by sending an email to info@icelandtravelguide.is. All cancellations requested less than 24 hours from the departure time are non refundable.
- In the case of cancellation of the tour by the operator because of extreme weather, road conditions or other factors, we will assist you with rebooking to another date or booking other activities when possible, or provide a full refund.
