The Secret Lagoon: Oldest Geothermal Swimming Pool in Iceland
Iceland is located at the edge of the Arctic circle and is globally known for the magnificent hot springs that you can find all over the country. One of the best hot spring that you can find in Iceland is The Secret Lagoon. Make sure you don’t miss out visiting the Hot springs of Iceland, it is one of the most popular tourist attraction.
About the Secret Lagoon
The Secret Lagoon was constructed in 1891 and has been the official oldest swimming pool in Iceland. Natives call it ‘Gamla Laugin’ or ‘the old pool’. A man-made pool, The Secret Lagoon is fed by the naturally occurring hot springs at Hverahólmi, the geothermal area, next to Flúðir village in southern Iceland. The hot spring is located in the Golden Circle area, and is close to the Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir geothermal area. Flúðir is well known for the volcanic activity, that is beneficial to be used for agriculture and horticulture and thus helpful in producing fresh food throughout the year.
Enjoy the Goodness of Natural Hot Water Bath
Over the years the pool has been modified to accommodate a larger number of people; though it makes use of the natural terrain and geothermal heating to give true Icelandic feeling to the tourists. The water stays consistently steady at 38-40 Celsius (100° Fahrenheit) all year long. The pool is located amidst the lap of nature that is complemented by the steam rising into the air, which makes this place magical, calm, and surreal. Not just this, the area has numerous geothermal spots along with a little Geysir that erupts every 5 minutes. If you visit during winters, you will be awestruck by the light show overhead, yes, these are the northern lights fluttering over the sky that are often clearly visible from the Secret Lagoon. There is no better way to relax in the pool’s warm water that rejuvenates you and makes you feel refreshed. When visiting the Secret Lagoon, don’t forget to carry your swimsuit and towel, although you can rent one at the hot spring if you forgot your own.
