Basic Information

With a small population of 300 inhabitants, the village of Tálknafjörður is situated between Patreksfjörður and Bíldudalur in the Westfjords of Iceland. Despite a small population, the village has maintained its charm and liveliness because of natural beauty. It has all the amenities of modern-day including a post office, guesthouses, and restaurants. For centuries, people maintained their living from fishing. Even today, fishing is an important part of the economy of Tálknafjörður. The village attracts large groups of tourists every year. The biggest attraction of the village is sea angling that draws the attention of travelers throughout the year. In the north of the fjord, you will find natural hot springs called Pollurinn. The energy of the hot spring is used for fish farming and heating the swimming pool.

When you move just outside this village, you will witness the natural hot springs. You can enjoy the stunning beauty of the surrounding mountains while taking a bath in these hot pools. These cement-lined geothermal pools are called Pollurin. They have become a favorite spot to relax among residents. There is a wooden cabin adjacent to the geothermal pool that offers to change room facilities.

The local swimming pool is also a great place to visit when in Tálknafjörður. There is a 25-meter large outdoor pool, cold tub, hot tubs, sauna, baby pool, and a fun waterslide. It is also equipped with a lift to assist disabled people in entering and exiting the pool. You will find a gym inside the pool building. While exploring the area nearby, you will witness a campsite that could be the perfect place to spend the evening if you are on a camping trip or driving on a camper van. Though this campsite opens from 1st of June to 1st of September, here you can find a kitchen, outside barbecue, showers, and toilets. They provide a washing machine and dryer facility also to make camping easier.

Hiking Trails Of Tálknafjörður

If you love to go adventurous on your trips then Tálknafjörður is an ideal place to visit. You can find many hiking trails on either side of the fjord. Many of these hiking trails were used to cross the surrounding mountains and the heaths.  From Tálknafjörður village, there are walking trails leading to almost all directions. If you plan to hike towards Bíldudalur, then you have two ways to choose from. Either you can take the main road over Hálfdán or the second route going over Tunguheiði. If you are planning to walk towards Patreksfjörður, you will have three options. You can either go through the main road over Miklidalur or the road over Lambeyrarháls; the third route goes over Stórhæð through Rangárgil.

Visit Around Tálknafjörður

Travel around this beautiful fjord of Tálknafjörður to witness many naturally protected tourist attractions. When you explore the Westfjords, near this town, you will find the largest bird cliff in Europe called Látrabjarg. Látrabjarg is located at the westernmost point of Europe. A favorite place for nature and bird lovers, Látrabjarg is a stripe of seven cliffs stretched across 14-kilometers. With a height up to 441 meters, it is the biggest sea-cliff in Iceland. Látrabjarg is known to be one of the most crowded bird cliffs in the world.

How To Reach Tálknafjörður

Tálknafjörður is situated at a distance of about 406-kilometers from the capital city of Iceland, Reykjavík. If you are starting from Reykjavík, drive on the Ring Road 1 towards the north and pass through the Borgornes town. After driving for around half an hour, take a left turn towards Vestfjarðavegur and head onto route 60. Cross Búðardalur and Gufudalur while driving towards west on the same route. At Flókalundur, take a left turn to head on to route number 62. After driving for few kilometers on this route, take a right turn just before Patreksfjörður to drive on route 62. You will reach the beautiful village of Tálknafjörður after some time. Traveling from Reykjavík to Tálknafjörður takes more than five hours. It is suggested to stop at the beautiful attractions during the journey.
