Hike to the Ice Cave
Upon reaching the glacier parking lot, your guide will distribute the necessary gear for the tour. This includes crampons, an ice axe, a harness, a helmet equipped with a headlamp, and, if rented, hiking boots. Once everyone is equipped, embark on a leisurely 30-minute hike to the glacier’s edge. The terrain is generally straightforward, with a mostly flat and slightly rocky path. Our pace is tailored to the comfort of our guests, ensuring you can savor the stroll while your guide expertly leads the way.
Arriving at The Crystal Ice Cave
Upon reaching the glacier’s edge, a breathtaking sight awaits—a colossal cavern with a river flowing beneath. Welcome to our extraordinary Crystal Ice Cave, also known as the Sapphire Ice Cave. This cave undergoes annual transformations in shape, location, and size, as it naturally melts and reforms during the summertime. Each visit guarantees a unique experience, making it an ever-changing marvel.
Before venturing into the cave, your guide will assist you in donning your crampons. Following a detailed instruction on how to secure them, your guide will conduct a safety briefing covering glacier walking and cave exploration. It’s crucial to comprehend and adhere to these guidelines, ensuring a safe and memorable experience on the ice. Feel free to ask any questions before setting foot on this enchanting glacier.
Exploring The Crystal Ice Cave
Stepping into the ice cave is an extraordinary and surreal encounter, offering a captivating experience for most individuals. Your eyes will gradually adapt to the ethereal surroundings, revealing the crystal blue walls that conceal the cave’s hidden beauty. As your guide guides you further into the ice cave, they will skillfully use their camera to capture you in the most picturesque locations and angles. With extensive experience exploring and photographing these caves, they possess unparalleled expertise in ensuring you receive stunning photos. Relax and relish the cave without concern, as your guide works to immortalize your experience in remarkable images.
While relishing the ice cave, your guide will impart knowledge about its formation and composition. The exploration inside the cave typically spans around an hour, allowing you to discover various chambers and unique features. The configuration of these caves, with multiple chambers to explore as you delve deeper, can vary from year to year. Once everyone is content with their photos and has savored the cave experience, we will gracefully exit and transition onto the glacier.
Glacier Hike to the Zip Line
Following that, affix your crampons securely to the ice, commencing your journey onto the Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier. Walking on the ice offers a truly unique sensation that may take some adjustment initially, but as the tour progresses, you’ll find yourself reluctant to part with your crampons! Accompanied by the rhythmic crunch beneath you, you’ll stride forward, following your guide’s lead up the glacier, heading towards the moulin where the zip line awaits.
Throughout this exhilarating experience, your guide will point out distinct formations on the glacier, such as moulins or deep glacial holes. Amidst the barren landscape, you’ll be immersed in a surreal world, marveling at the breathtaking surroundings as you journey onward.
