Get Face to Face with Fun and Thrill
The tour will start with an ATV ride on the black sand beach in the area. This is a meet-on-location tour so you will find your guide at Mýrdalsjökull Base. As soon you reach the location and are ready to hit the road (in this case, the black sand beach), the guide will explain the safety measures that you need to take when riding the ATV’s and provide you with the necessary gear that you will need on the ride. After all the formalities, you head towards your vehicles and ride off on the beach. You will cover a great area of the black sand beach on the south coast and witness some beautiful scenery of the glacier. The final stop of your ride will be the Sólheimasandur DC3 plane wreck site.
Note that a valid driver’s license is required to drive the ATV and the drivers should be 17 years of age or older to be eligible. The license should be in English. If it is in any other language, please make sure that you carry a valid English translation of it. A motorbike license and a learner’s permit are not valid for driving in Iceland.
Paddle Towards Tranquility
When the ATV ride ends, you will have to travel to the next meeting point, Sólheimajökull Base – where your kayak tour will start. The driving instruction to the meet-up point will be on the voucher that you will receive on booking the tour. Once you are there, the same procedure of your guide explaining the operating instructions and providing the kayaking equipment and protection gear, like dry suit, will follow. You will receive some hands-on tips about paddling.
Now, when everyone is set with equipment, gear, and techniques, you will board your beginner-friendly kayak and set out in small groups of 7 or 8 people. This paddling trip last for about 90 minutes. You will experience the glacier in a way a walking tour will never be able to offer. You will see the high cliffs, icebergs breaking away from the glacier and the beautiful electric ice contrasting with the colors of the surroundings.
The tour including the ATV ride and kayaking in the glacier lagoon will last about 5.5 hours. You will get enough time to click pictures for your Instagram and Snapchat handles at all the sites.
