Itinerary

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is a breathtaking natural wonder that leaves visitors in awe. If there’s ever a perfect time to capture stunning photos, it’s when you arrive at this lagoon. Formed by the retreat of Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet of the vast Vatnajökull Glacier, the glacier has carved into the land, creating a depression that has filled with meltwater. The lagoon has been expanding ever since. Massive icebergs frequently break off from the glacier’s edge, a process called ‘calving,’ and float gracefully through the lagoon before drifting into the Atlantic Ocean, creating a magical sight for all who visit.

About the Crystal Ice Cave

Visiting a naturally formed ice cave is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience! These incredible blue ice caves are hidden deep within glaciers, created by the powerful flow of meltwater as it carves tunnels and channels through the ice. During the colder months, these water-formed caves freeze solid, making them stable and safe to explore. The natural light filtering through the dense ice creates a breathtaking, almost otherworldly atmosphere, perfect for adventurers and photography lovers alike. This is an absolute must-see for anyone seeking Iceland’s natural wonders!

Your Crystal Ice Cave Tour

We’ll pick you up at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in a super jeep and drive to the edge of the glacier, where you’ll gear up for the ice cave adventure. After a short 20-30 minute hike, you’ll arrive at the stunning ice cave, which you can explore at your own pace. You’ll be provided with a helmet, so we recommend wearing a smaller hat to fit comfortably underneath.

Once we’ve finished exploring the cave, we’ll head back to the pick-up location at Jökulsárlón.

We suggest spending the night near Vatnajökull, as winter road and weather conditions in Iceland can be unpredictable. Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is 379 km from Reykjavik, a drive of at least 4.5 hours in ideal conditions. Staying nearby before or after the ice cave tour is a great option for convenience and safety.

Return time: You’ll return to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon approximately 2-3 hours after your pick-up.
