Formation of Fjaðrárgljúfur

Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon is believed to be 2 million years old and is approximately 2 km long while nearly 100 meters deep.  It was around 9-10,000 years ago that a powerful glacial river abruptly ran through Fjaðrárgljúfur from glacier edges, which resulted in what we see today, the magical and majestic canyon. With the erosion of palagonite, the harder rocks were left behind, which led to the formation of this canyon.
