Basic Information
- Grundarfoss is a less explored waterfall, located in Snæfellsnes Peninsula.
- 15 minutes easy hike required.
Grundarfoss is a scenic waterfall located in the outskirts of Grundarfjörður town in Snæfellsnes Peninsula. A marvel on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, Grundarfoss is a majestic waterfall that would stun you with its rich locales. ‘Grund’ translates to “field” or “plain” in English. This is probably because when looked at from a distance, the waterfall seems to be located in a vast field against the backdrop of mountains. The height of the waterfall is 70 meters high and it cascades into the river Grundará. This explains the name of the waterfall being borrowed from the river. The origin of the Grundará is based in the mountains where the melting water from the Rauðakúlur provides for the flow of the river.
Grundarfoss waterfall is still considered one of the less-known treasures of the country. Globetrotters, who love to experience the magical air of waterfalls, can make their way to Grundarfoss.
You can reach the waterfall after hiking for a few meters, covered in 15 minutes. Experiencing the clear blue waters amidst the amazing scenery can be blissful. Admiring distant ranges and horizons from the Grundarfoss waterfall can truly fill you with energy.
Getting to Grundarfoss Waterfall
From road 1, you have to drive towards Búðardalur which is road 59. Then, you have to keep driving to Grundarfjörður (road 60>54). You will have to cross the town Grundarfjörður to get to the waterfall. Pass Kverná farm on road 54 and turn towards the right at the sign Grundarfoss.
There is an entry gate from which you have to drive for quite a short distance on the dirt road until you get close to the water supply area. Please take care to close the gate after you.
