Itinerary

Explore Iceland’s Volcanic Wonders on This Half-Day Adventure

Join us on an unforgettable journey through Iceland’s geothermal landscapes, where lava fields, craters, and steaming hot springs reveal the raw power of nature. This tour takes you through the dramatic Reykjanes Peninsula, visiting Kleifarvatn Lake, Seltún geothermal area, Grænavatn crater, Nátthagi eruption site, Grindavík, and the Sundhnúkagígar lava field—one of Iceland’s newest volcanic formations.

Kleifarvatn – The Mysterious Volcanic Lake

Aerial view of Lake Klaifarvatn in Reykjanes GeoPark

Our adventure begins at Kleifarvatn, the largest and deepest lake on the Reykjanes Peninsula. This stunning volcanic lake, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and lava formations, has no visible rivers flowing in or out, making it a geological mystery. Local legends even tell of a mythical sea creature lurking beneath its surface!

Seltún – The Colorful Geothermal Wonderland

Next, we visit Seltún, a geothermal hot spring area with bubbling mud pools, hissing steam vents, and multicolored mineral-rich hills. The Mars-like landscape here is one of the most surreal places in Iceland, offering fantastic photo opportunities.

Grænavatn – The Emerald Crater Lake

Grænavatn Lake Reykjanes Peninsula

A short drive brings us to Grænavatn, a crater lake with vibrant green waters, caused by high sulfur content and thermal activity. This hidden gem of Reykjanes is a must-see for photographers and nature lovers.

Nátthagi – The 2021 Lava Flow Site

We then explore Nátthagi, the Fagradalsfjall eruption site, where fresh lava from the 2021 volcanic eruption reshaped the landscape. Here, you’ll walk along a solidified lava river, witnessing the aftermath of one of Iceland’s most spectacular eruptions.

🔹 Optional: A short hike (about 20 minutes) takes you to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the lava field.

Grindavík – Iceland’s Eruption-Affected Town

Grindavik eruption town in Iceland

Experience the eerie silence of Grindavík, a once-thriving fishing town impacted by multiple volcanic eruptions. Since late 2023, seismic activity forced evacuations, leaving behind an abandoned landscape that tells a powerful story of resilience and nature’s force.

🔹 We’ll make a short stop at a local café for refreshments.

Sundhnúkagígar – The Newest Lava Field in Iceland

Reykjanes Volcano area & Grindavík Tour, Reykjanes eruption

Our final stop is Sundhnúkagígar, Iceland’s freshest lava field, formed by recent volcanic eruptions. You’ll witness the steaming ground, rugged black lava formations, and a constantly evolving landscape—a rare opportunity to see Iceland’s geology in action!

Return to Reykjavík

After an exciting day of volcanic exploration, we’ll drive back to Reykjavík, arriving in the early evening—perfect for relaxing or continuing your Icelandic adventure!
