The journey begins early in the morning as we depart from the heart of Reykjavík to make the most of the day. The scenic 3–4 hour drive takes you along the south coast and into the highlands of Iceland, where the week’s adventure unfolds. Along the way, you’ll pass by the legendary Hekla volcano, Iceland’s most active volcano, often referred to in medieval times as “The Gateway to Hell.” With its frequent eruptions over the past century, Hekla adds a touch of drama to the breathtaking landscapes.
Our destination, Landmannalaugar, marks the starting point of the Laugavegur Trail, a world-renowned hiking route. The day’s hike takes you through the Laugahraun lava field and the striking Vondugil canyon, showcasing the vibrant rhyolite mountains that define the area. You’ll marvel at the stunning colors of Mt. Brennisteinsalda, one of the trail’s most famous landmarks.
Afterward, we’ll return to our first night’s accommodation in the charming Landmannalaugar huts, with opportunities to explore the Grænafjall gorge and, if time permits, ascend the Bláhnjúkur Volcano for sweeping panoramic views.

After a restful night and a hearty breakfast, we’ll set off on another incredible day of hiking through Iceland’s awe-inspiring highlands. Today’s trek takes us across the mesmerizing Hrafntinnusker obsidian desert, where the black volcanic glass creates a stark and dramatic landscape. From there, we’ll navigate the vibrant Reykjafjöll rhyolite mountains and the geothermally active Jökultungur area, famous for its vivid yellows and reds formed by centuries of geothermal activity.
At the top of Jökultungur, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views over the Fjallabak region and Álftavatn Lake, our destination for the night. The contrast between the colorful ridges and soft sandy plains makes this part of the journey truly unforgettable.
Before reaching our hut accommodation by Álftavatn Lake, we’ll cross a river on foot—a thrilling and memorable experience for hikers, especially those new to Iceland’s unique terrain.

After a hearty breakfast, we’re ready to continue our adventure through Iceland’s incredible wilderness. The day starts with another exciting river crossing, wading through streams as we head into Mælifellssandur, a dramatic area that introduces us to Iceland’s volcanic landscape. Along the way, we’ll pass by the mighty Stórasúla and Hattafell volcanoes, both iconic landmarks of the Icelandic highlands.
As we approach Emstrur, the views become even more spectacular. On clear days, we’re treated to breathtaking panoramas of the famous Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers, both towering volcano glaciers that have shaped the landscape of southern Iceland.
Next, we’ll make our way to Botnar, a lush green oasis nestled within a stark black sand desert. En route, we’ll visit the stunning Markarfljótsgljúfur Canyon, a 200-meter deep gorge carved by a glacial river, offering one of the most dramatic landscapes of the journey. We’ll spend the night in the peaceful Botnar area, surrounded by this unique and diverse terrain.

After a nourishing breakfast, we’ll continue our journey from Emstrur to the beautiful Þórsmörk Valley. The hike begins by passing through the Almenningar gorge, nestled beneath the majestic Mount Einhyrningur (the Unicorn Mountain), and the glacier views remain awe-inspiring as we trek forward. As we approach Þórsmörk, the landscape begins to change, and we’ll start noticing scattered trees—a sign that we’re entering the famous Þórsmörk birch forest.
Þórsmörk is renowned for its lush, dense birch forests, providing a striking contrast to the rugged, barren landscapes we’ve traversed thus far. Our accommodation for the night is located in a truly magnificent spot, with breathtaking views of the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers that will serve as a dramatic backdrop for your celebration of completing the world-famous Laugavegur Trail!

Today, we embark on one of Iceland’s most spectacular hikes through the Fimmvörðuháls Pass, the magnificent high mountain pass nestled between the Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull glaciers. The latter is famous for its dramatic 2010 eruption, and today we’ll explore the two new craters, Magni and Móði, which were formed during this eruption. Named after the sons of Þór (Thor), the Norse God, these craters symbolize strength and bravery, with their names meaning “strong” and “brave.”
The Fimmvörðuháls Pass offers breathtaking views, showcasing the power of nature as Iceland continues to evolve through volcanic activity. The surrounding landscapes, shaped by lava flows and geological forces, provide a surreal and unforgettable backdrop for your final stretch of this epic journey.
We will spend our final night surrounded by the stunning, other-worldly vistas of Þórsmörk, celebrating the completion of both the Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls trails with a traditional Icelandic grilled lamb dinner.

On the final day of our trek, we’ll explore the enchanting Þórsmörk Valley and its surrounding landscapes. For those looking for a rewarding challenge, the hike up Mount Útigönguhöfði offers breathtaking views over the valley and the surrounding glaciers. If you prefer a more leisurely experience, you can enjoy a peaceful stroll to Húsadalur Valley, or simply relax in Langidalur Valley before we head back to Reykjavík.
En route to the city, we’ll pass by the iconic Seljalandsfoss waterfall, one of Iceland’s most popular and photogenic attractions, offering a perfect opportunity for a quick stop. We will return to Reykjavík in the early evening, around 18:30, where you can easily catch a taxi or local bus from one of the drop-off points, including Miklabraut 101 Orkan gas station near Kringlan shopping mall, Reykjavík Campsite, and City Hall on Vonarstræti.
