The scenic 3–4 hour drive takes you along the south coast and into the highlands of Iceland, where the week’s adventure unfolds. Along the way, you’ll pass by the legendary Hekla volcano, Iceland’s most active volcano, often referred to in medieval times as “The Gateway to Hell.” With its frequent eruptions over the past century, Hekla adds a touch of drama to the breathtaking landscapes.

Our destination, Landmannalaugar, marks the starting point of the Laugavegur Trail, a world-renowned hiking route. The day’s hike takes you through the Laugahraun lava field and the striking Vondugil canyon, showcasing the vibrant rhyolite mountains that define the area. From there, we’ll navigate the vibrant Reykjafjöll rhyolite mountains and the geothermally active Jökultungur area, famous for its vivid yellows and reds formed by centuries of geothermal activity.

At the top of Jökultungur, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views over the Fjallabak region and Álftavatn Lake, our destination for the night. The contrast between the colorful ridges and soft sandy plains makes this part of the journey truly unforgettable.

Along the way, we’ll pass by the mighty Stórasúla and Hattafell volcanoes, both iconic landmarks of the Icelandic highlands.

As we approach Emstrur, the views become even more spectacular. On clear days, we’re treated to breathtaking panoramas of the famous Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers, both towering volcano glaciers that have shaped the landscape of southern Iceland.

Next, we’ll make our way to Botnar, a lush green oasis nestled within a stark black sand desert. En route, we’ll visit the stunning Markarfljótsgljúfur Canyon, a 200-meter deep gorge carved by a glacial river, offering one of the most dramatic landscapes of the journey. Named after the sons of Þór (Thor), the Norse God, these craters symbolize strength and bravery, with their names meaning “strong” and “brave.”

The Fimmvörðuháls Pass offers breathtaking views, showcasing the power of nature as Iceland continues to evolve through volcanic activity. The surrounding landscapes, shaped by lava flows and geological forces, provide a surreal and unforgettable backdrop for your final stretch of this epic journey.

If you prefer a more leisurely experience, you can enjoy a peaceful stroll to Húsadalur Valley, or simply relax in Langidalur Valley before we head back to Reykjavík.

En route to the city, we’ll pass by the iconic Seljalandsfoss waterfall, one of Iceland’s most popular and photogenic attractions, offering a perfect opportunity for a quick stop. We will return to Reykjavík in the early evening, around 18:30, where you can easily catch a taxi or local bus from one of the drop-off points, including Miklabraut 101 Orkan gas station near Kringlan shopping mall, Reykjavík Campsite, and City Hall on Vonarstræti.
