About Tour

Experience the stunning beauty of Katla Ice Cave on our semi-private tour, departing from the village of Vík in South Iceland. Ideal for solo travelers in the area, we’ll take you to Katla glacier, a flowing ice tongue from Mýrdals glacier, Iceland’s fourth-largest glacier. We don’t just offer a brief 30-minute stop – our priority is to give you the best value for your money, spending a minimum of 90 minutes here, exploring multiple caves and hiking on the glacier.

But that’s not all – we’ll also take you on a thrilling Super Jeep adventure to Hjörleifshöfði on the coast, driving on back roads and rough tracks, and even on the beach. You’ll witness the raw, natural beauty of Iceland’s landscape, with towering mountains of ice and crystal blue ice caves. Don’t miss this chance to explore one of Iceland’s most breathtaking destinations.

Itinerary

We prioritize your enjoyment and take things at a leisurely pace, allowing you to fully savor the experience. Our minimum allotted time for the tour is 90 minutes, so you won’t feel rushed.

The Katla glacier, the fourth-largest in Iceland, is a flow of ice, and we’ll explore it in-depth during the tour. Many caves are found at the base of the glacier, created by water that flows down during warmer months. We’ll hike around on the glacier and explore these caves, taking in the raw beauty of the area. It’s a true cinematic landscape with crystal blue ice caves, rugged Icelandic nature, and towering mountains of ice.

We’re never tired of visiting this stunning location and can’t wait to share its magnificence with you.

KAtla ICe CAve

We’ll begin our journey with a pick-up and then head out of the city towards Hvammsvík, a set of unique hot springs located in the stunning Hvalfjörður.

Fun fact: during World War II, this fjord was used as a naval base by the British and American navies, and it used to be the main road between Reykjavík and Borgarnes until 1998, when a tunnel was constructed under the ocean, considerably shortening the trip. Nowadays, there is almost no traffic in the fjord, which makes it even more peaceful and beautiful.

Hjörleifshöfði Yoda Cave & hidden Black Sand Beach

After exploring the glacier, we’ll head south towards the coast to visit Hjorleifshofdi, a massive rocky outcrop that was once an island until the eruption of Katla volcano in 1918 changed its landscape forever.

Steeped in fascinating history, we’ll regale you with tales of the first settlers who made landfall on this spot. During our visit, we’ll explore Hjorleifshofdi Cave, also known as the Yoda Cave.

To cap off our adventure, we’ll take you to a secluded black sand beach away from the crowds. It’s the perfect spot to reflect on the day’s experiences and take in the stunning natural beauty of Iceland’s coastline.

FAQ

In Iceland, the weather can be highly unpredictable and it’s not uncommon to experience different weather patterns throughout the day. While you may be greeted with a beautiful morning during the pick-up in Reykjavík, there’s no guarantee it will last. The weather can change rapidly, and you might find yourself experiencing all four seasons in a single day. Therefore, it’s important to come well-prepared with plenty of layers to stay comfortable, regardless of the weather.

Iceland is renowned for its unpredictable and ever-changing weather, and even during a short hike, you may experience all four seasons.

Dressing appropriately for such variable weather can be a challenge, which is why we always recommend dressing in layers. We suggest wearing three upper layers, starting with a light t-shirt made of wool or a wool blend as your base layer, followed by a fleece or heavy wool garment, and topped off with a waterproof windbreaker.

For your lower body, lightweight hiking pants, track pants, or long cotton pants are best, covered by wind and waterproof pants. It’s not advisable to wear jeans for hiking, as they become heavy, cold, and uncomfortable when wet.

Sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended, but good quality sneakers can suffice for this relatively easy and brief hike.

We highly recommend obtaining travel insurance before embarking on any adventure activities in Iceland. Having personal health insurance coverage is also strongly advised, as it is when traveling to any destination worldwide.
