About Tour

About Laki Craters (Lakagígar)
In 1783, the Laki volcanic fissure erupted in southern Iceland, unleashing one of the most powerful and destructive eruptions in recorded history. Over an 8-month period, it created a 27-kilometer-long fissure with around 140 craters, covering vast areas in lava and releasing poisonous gases. The eruption caused catastrophic damage to Icelandic agriculture and livestock and contributed to global climate disruptions—some historians even link it to the onset of the French Revolution.
Today, the Laki Craters stand as a hauntingly beautiful reminder of nature’s raw power. From the summit of Mt. Laki, you’ll enjoy panoramic views over endless lava fields, glacial rivers, and rugged highland scenery.

Itinerary
Your adventure begins with a complimentary pickup from your hotel or guesthouse in Kirkjubæjarklaustur at 9:00 AM. From there, we head into the wild Icelandic Highlands aboard a powerful Super Jeep, built for the rugged terrain and river crossings ahead.
Lakagígar – Laki Craters

By around 10:30 AM, we arrive at the heart of the Laki Craters, a dramatic 27-kilometer volcanic fissure lined with over 140 craters. At the center stands Mount Laki, rising 200 meters above the landscape.
You’ll have about 2.5 hours to explore:
Hike to the summit of Mount Laki for panoramic views of the crater row and surrounding Highlands.
Walk the interpretive trail into a nearby crater and experience the surreal, moss-covered lava landscape up close.
Prefer to skip the hike? Your guide can drive you to a scenic viewpoint on a nearby ridge for equally stunning photo opportunities.
Tjarnargígur – The Tranquil Crater Lake

Next, we take a short drive to Tjarnargígur, a picturesque crater lake nestled in lava fields. A gentle walk takes you to a viewing platform overlooking the serene water basin.
You’ll then have the option to:
Join a 1-hour hike through the rugged terrain of the crater row—beginning with a steep descent down lava steps and continuing along uneven, rocky paths.
Or, skip the hike and enjoy a relaxing ride in the Super Jeep, meeting the group at the trail’s end.
Alternatively, explore nearby craters on an easier path or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings from the jeep.
Scenic Drive Through Lakagígar

After regrouping, we continue along a narrow mountain trail, driving through the expansive lava fields that surround the Laki Craters. This loop offers a deeper look into the dramatic volcanic landscape carved by the 1783 eruption.
Fagrifoss – Iceland’s “Beautiful Waterfall”

On our return, we stop at one of Iceland’s hidden gems—Fagrifoss, which translates to “Beautiful Falls.” This secluded waterfall is tucked away in the Highlands, far from the typical tourist path. You’ll have 20–30 minutes to explore, take photos, and soak in the tranquil atmosphere.
Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon – A Majestic Finale

Our final stop is the famous Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, one of Iceland’s most breathtaking natural wonders. Walk along the upper edge of the canyon, gazing down into the lush green ravine and the winding river far below. It’s a perfect place to end your day with awe-inspiring views and unforgettable photos.
Return to Kirkjubæjarklaustur
We arrive back in Kirkjubæjarklaustur around 5:00 PM, where you’ll be dropped off at your original pickup location—ending the day with memories of one of Iceland’s most spectacular and historic landscapes.
