Itinerary

The South Coast of Iceland tour begins with a pick up from Reykjavik. You can find your pick up location in the drop down menu when booking the tour. The pick up is included in the tour price. Once everyone has been picked up we will leave the city of Reykjavik and begin our adventure on the South Coast of Iceland.

When driving along the south coast of Iceland you will see magnificent mountains to your left while the North Atlantic ocean will be on your right side. Glacial and sea erosion has been shaping and sculpting the dramatic landscape of the South Coast for thousands of years. Now it features glaciers, volcanoes, black sand beaches, lava fields, waterfalls and so much more. This contrast is what makes the South Coast of Iceland so attractive. On this day tour to the South Coast you will be exploring the top attractions of this place that will give you the best of what Icelandic nature has to offer.

Skógafoss waterfall

The first stop of the tour will be Skógafoss waterfall. Skógafoss is a forever must-visit place for every trip made to the south coast of Iceland. Skógafoss is one of the most astonishing waterfalls in Iceland. The water in the waterfall originates from Eyjafjallajokull volcanic glacier and Myrdalsjokull glacier and falls from a height of 60 meters. Most of the time you can see a beautiful rainbow, if not two, at the waterfall.

The sights here at Skógafoss waterfall are simply breathtaking. There are the obvious wide-spread fields of green and lush moss all over the surrounding cliffs. At the right side of the waterfall, you can find a staircase that travels from the bottom of the gorge to the top of the waterfall making it easy to hike the elevation. Hike up the stairs to see the waterfall from above. You will not be disappointed by the views of the surrounding area.

It is also possible and very easy to hike up to the waterfall from the ground. You can get very close to the waterfall and feel the power of the water falling. If you get too close you will get wet, so bring your raincoats!

A thick fog rising from the water falling in the gorge forms beautiful rainbows that add to the overall charm of the falls. Featured in many movies, the beautiful waterfall also surrounds the folklore of having a secret treasure hidden in the cave behind the falls by Þrasi Þórólfsson which adds to the attraction of the falls.

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is the most popular beach in Iceland. The black sand of the beach the basalt column lava cave and Reynisdrangar Sea Stacks is what makes it so popular. The beach has been voted the best non-exotic beach in the world! The black sand of the beach is actually black volcanic rocks that have been in the sea and broken down to the black sand. You can also explore the bizarre basalt column wall located on the beach, and the cave next to it. This is the ideal place for an Icelandic family or group photo! From Reynisfjara black sand beach you can also see all the way to Dyrhólaey.

When visiting Reynisfjara you need to be very careful. The waves on this beach can be strong and dangerous. Always follow the safety advice of your guide while visiting the beach.

Sólheimajökull Glacier

Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier of Mýrdalsjökull icecap located on the south coast of Iceland. The glacier is about 8 kilometers long and 2 kilometers wide however, given the way it descends from its parent glacier, Sólheimajökull appears to be a lot bigger than its actual size. There is a lagoon at the base of Sólheimajökull which adds a lot to its overall beauty and appeal however it is a living breathing reminder of the shrinkage of the glacier. The glacier retreated almost 1 km between 2000 and 2015. This rapid melting has left behind interesting features such as steep mountains, big boulders of rock, and the glacier lagoon. This will give visitors a glimpse of the landscape-changing power these mighty glaciers have wielded over the years.
The color of the ice on Sólheimajökull is always changing and after rainfall one can see a distinctive blue hue to the ice.

Sólheimajökull is a very popular place for ice climbing and glacier hiking. The glacier stands tall in very close vicinity to the ring road making it a prime attraction that is easily accessible. On top of that, there are marvelous structures on this glacier that are not hindered by any other peaks blocking the view. Along with that, you will find several beautiful structures crawling with ash-filled ice, snake-like crevasses in the glacier.

There is a parking lot located close to the glacier, but due to the melting glacier, what was once a short stroll to the glacier is now a 20-minute walk. You will be walking along the lagoon with great views of the glacier.

Seljalandsfoss waterfall

A waterfall that is unique in more than just one way, Seljalandsfoss holds a very high place in the land of ice and fire as one of the top natural attractions to visit on the south coast. With immeasurably beautiful vast stretches all around it, Seljalandsfoss waterfall stands 60 meters tall and is fed by the river Seljalandsá that comes from Eyjafjallajokull glacier capped volcano. The cliffs from which the waterfall falls today used to be a part of the southern coastline of the country which is located on the lowlands now – visible from the site of the waterfall.

Seljalandsfoss is best known for the beautiful one-of-a-kind cave that the cliff behind the cascading falls contains. This cave is accessible for the visitors and offers a beautiful view of the waterfall that is not possible to get from any other angle. This means that you can walk behind and around the waterfall and get a view of the south coast through the fall itself.

Seljalandsfoss is a favorite among photographers and Instagrammers who love to take shots from all angles. Just a few hundred meters from Seljalandsfoss you can find one of Iceland’s hidden gems, Gljúfrabúi waterfall.

We highly recommend raincoat and sturdy shoes because you might get wet when walking behind the waterfall.

This will be the last stop of your day tour to the South Coast of Iceland. We will drive back to the city of Reykjavik where we will drop you off and you can continue your adventures in Iceland.
