Sturlungalaug hot spring is a remarkable geothermal pool located amidst a vast grassy field, surrounded by towering lava fields and majestic mountains. Unlike the crowded hot springs in Iceland, this hidden gem is relatively unknown and provides a perfect getaway for those who seek solitude and a tranquil atmosphere. The pool can accommodate at least 9-10 people, making it an ideal destination for families and friends to visit together.
Located in the western part of Iceland, on the way to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, this hot spring consists of two side-by-side pools, a larger one and a smaller one. The pool is surrounded by mud and turf, which is expected due to its location in the grassy field. Although it may not be as clean and well-maintained as other hot springs, the experience of having the pool all to yourself is unparalleled, providing a raw and authentic adventure.
Where is Sturlungalaut hot spring?
To reach the hot spring, visitors must drive along route 55, which can be a little tricky to find on the map. From Snæfellsnesvegi 54, follow the road along Heydalur until you reach Rauðhhálsar, where you need to take a turn and follow the road north of the Eldgígur Crater. It is advisable to carry all the necessary items, including food, swimsuits, towels, and extra clothes, as there are no stores in the vicinity.
Once you reach Syðri – Rauðamelur farm, look for the sign that says Syðri-rauðimelur. After crossing this stretch, you will reach a small parking lot with a gate. The pool is located southeast of the Syðri Rauðamelskúla crater, and you can spot it behind a small hill. Visitors can change their clothes at a borehole or a small cabin located a couple of hundred meters from the pool.
Visiting Sturlungalaug hot spring is a unique experience that requires some planning and effort, but it is all worth it. The secluded atmosphere, the raw and unexplored environment, and the opportunity to soak in a natural hot spring are what make this place an unforgettable destination.
