Stories With The Waterfall

In addition to the natural wonder, the cascade is also known for an amazing story and a mysterious cave situated behind the falling water.  Among the old age people, there is a thesis behind the cave which says that a troll used to live in this cave for centuries and guarded Fardagafoss waterfall until the cave collapsed.  Though the cave has been destroyed now, you can still walk behind the waterfall to see the remains of this mysterious cave. How to Reach Fardagafoss

The scenic Fardagafoss waterfall is located close to the leading road to Seyðisfjörður as it meanders up the mountainside of Fjardarheiði. It is situated at a distance of about 5 kilometers from Egilsstaðir. From the Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland, this place is located at a distance of about 639 kilometers. If you are traveling from Reykjavik, it will take 7 hours and 49 minutes to reach Fardagafoss. We recommend that you make it a multi day trip and stop at the beautiful natural attractions on the way to make your trip adventurous.

Drive on the Ring Road 1 to cross through the Borgarnes, towns of Sauðárkrókur and Akureyri. While driving at Egilsstaðir, take the exit to Road Number 93 to head towards Seyðisfjörður. At the point where the road goes up to Fjarðarheiði, there is a parking space on the right side of the road. You can notice the signboard of Fardagafoss at the parking space. From the parking space, you can reach to the lower part of the Fardagafoss by walking along the river Miðhúsaá. If you plan to visit Gufufoss and Mulafoss waterfall, drive further on road number 93 towards Seyðisfjörður.

This waterfall looks beautiful in every season of the year though visiting in the winters can be somewhat risky. The hiking paths and roads become slippery during rain or winter season therefore it is ideal to visit during summer months. To make your trip adventurous and safe, bring a pair of hiking boots and proper clothing. You can stay at any hotel or guesthouse at the nearby towns of Egilsstaðir or Seyðisfjörður when planning a multi day trip to East Iceland.
