Grænalón Glacier Lagoon

Basic Information

What’s one of the greatest wonders of nature that can be seen in Iceland? Well, it’s undoubtedly the Glacier Lagoons of Iceland. The first glacier lagoon was formed 10, 000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age. The country consists of a few glacier lagoons as a result of the warming climate. Grænalón Glacier Lagoon is, however, known for its uniqueness. As it is shrinking rather than expanding despite originating from Vatnjökull. Grænalón can be loosely translated as “Green-lagoon”. It is one of the glacial lakes of the Icelandic glacier Vatnjökull.

The aesthetics of this place are what makes it a photographer’s favorite. As the water within is murky brown instead of opaque azure. The beautiful hiking trail that leads to this lagoon is perfect for nature lovers and quiet place admirers. Moreover, it is located far from the coast and surrounded on three sides by ice-caps. Skaftafell National Park is located northwest of Grænalón Glacier Lagoon and can also be visited to enjoy the greenery.

Grænalón Glacier Lagoon

Situated in the south of Iceland, Grænalón is naturally dammed by the Skeiðarájökull glacier. Which is a southbound glacial flow from the body of Vatnjökull. Over the years, due to the glacier’s considerable thinning, the Grænalón has completely drained. Its surface area in the 20th century was found to be 18 square kilometers.  The rivers across the valley may make the path to reach places difficult. However, the beautiful view compensates for that.

How to Get To Grænalón Glacier Lagoon

Grænalón Glacier Lagoon is located on the eastern side of the Vatnjökull glacier. The visitors can reach it either by hiking, with a helicopter, or on a 4X4 vehicle. It is about a five-hour drive from Reykjavik. However, the journey will be 7 hours long if you are coming from Akureyri. While coming from Reykjavik you’ll pass a bridge just before reaching your destination. But, if you hit the bridge while coming from Akureyri, then that means you have gone a little too far. Hence, keep in check the path you are following to avoid unnecessary trouble in the way.

What to Wear

The climate in Iceland is mostly cold, windy, and cloudy. It is a cold country due to the high latitude. So, keep your warmers and coats in place to keep yourself warm in Iceland. If you are planning on visiting the glacier lagoons, then do keep waterproof hiking boots and clothes.

The best time to visit the Grænalón Glacier Lagoon is during the day when there is plenty of light hitting the icebergs. This glacier lagoon and the place in all is a perfect tourist spot for its beautiful scenic view.
