Just a two-hour drive from Reykjavik, Snaefellsnes Peninsula is filled with gems like lava fields, caves, and waterfalls that you can include in your itinerary for Iceland. Iceland’s smallest National Park is also located in Snaefellsnes Peninsula. The peninsula which is 90 km long has various hiking trails and trekking routes that you can explore. It is easy to get to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. You either have to drive around the entire fjord of Hvalfjörður or go through Hvalfjardargöng, the road tunnel which will take you under the fjord. Reaching here takes about two hours from Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. Then just keep following Route 1 till you get to Borgarnes. Finally, take a turn to Snæfellsvegur (Road 54) which will direct you into the peninsula. From there you can conveniently find Berserkjahraun Lava Field.

Berserkjahraun lava field is beautiful in all seasons. You can enjoy snowfall in winters amidst which Iceland looks stunning. Though few precautions are to be taken during cold weather. There are villages in between where you can find locals but at times it is difficult to find anyone to ask directions. If you are not used to self driving, and have not spent good amount of time planning your trip, you can hire a professional guide so that you are not lost or stranded on a personal tour. Keep snacks that are high on vitamin D as sunlight is low in winters.
